Are kangaroos farmed?

There is no farming of kangaroos in Australia, kangaroos are wild animals that range over extensive pastoral areas and are humanely harvested in their own environment.

Does kangaroo meat contain any antibiotics or added growth hormones?

Definitely not! Kangaroos are open range animals and they are harvested in their own environment. Sourcing meat from our natural environment, and not farms, is a huge bonus as it means kangaroo meat is never exposed to human intervention. So you can rest easy knowing that the kangaroo meat you eat is free from antibiotics, added growth hormones and added chemicals.

Is kangaroo difficult to cook?

Kangaroo is quick and easy to cook. It is best to serve kangaroo fillets and steaks medium rare, due to its low fat content, it can dry out if overcooked. However, kangaroo mince, sausages, burgers and meatballs must be cooked thoroughly, just like other mince/processed meat products. More cooking information here.

How should I cook kangaroo mince?

Kangaroo mince must be cooked thoroughly and can be cooked just like other minces. Kangaroo mince is a low fat alternative in bolognese, lasagne, burgers, meatballs and savoury mince dishes.

Can I cook kangaroo in the slow cooker?

Yes, there are several cuts that can be used in slow cooking dishes. The kangaroo steak (leg cut) can be diced and used in curries and casseroles, or you could use our pre-diced kangaroo. Also, our kangaroo mini roasts are ideal for slow cooking and give a tender result where the meat will fall apart.

Can I freeze kangaroo meat?

Yes you can. It is recommended to remove the meat from its tray and freeze in a suitable freezer bag for up to 3 months.

What’s the best way to defrost kangaroo meat?

Kangaroo meat is best thawed in the fridge. Fillets and steaks will take around 12 hours or overnight, depending on quantity and your fridge settings. It’s not recommended to defrost meat at room temperature or in water and this can cause bacterial growth as well as loss of flavour and quality. This is the same for all meats.

If I’ve defrosted kangaroo meat, can I refreeze it?

It is not recommended to refreeze meat, unless the meat has been cooked.

How long can I store fresh kangaroo meat for in the fridge once I’ve opened the packaging?

Fillets/Steak: 2-3 days

Is the kangaroo I buy in the supermarket fresh?

Absolutely! Gourmet Game kangaroo meat products are processed fresh at our processing facility in Adelaide. They are then distributed fresh to supermarkets nationally.

Is it ok to eat kangaroo if I am pregnant?

Yes, it is fine for pregnant women to eat kangaroo meat. However, during pregnancy it is recommended to eat foods that have been cooked thoroughly. So it is safest to eat meat/fish that you can cook through and best not to serve rare.
